Democrats used campaign funds to pay Biden’s lawyers – media — RT World News

The party reportedly diverted donations to cover the president's legal fees while criticizing Donald Trump for doing the same

The Democratic Party has reportedly diverted political donations to help cover the legal costs incurred by Joe Biden as he is investigated for mishandling state secrets – even as the US president's re-election campaign condemned his rival Donald Trump for the same tactic.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has paid more than $1.5 million to lawyers or firms representing Biden, Axios I reported that on Friday, citing campaign finance records and unidentified people familiar with the matter. The payments were made between July 2023 and February 2024, while US Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Hoare was investigating Biden's handling of classified documents he illegally kept after completing his two terms as vice president.

Even with those payments made, the Biden campaign has intensified its criticism of former US President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee in this year's elections, for using political donations to pay his lawyers' salaries. Trump has reportedly incurred more than $100 million in legal fees while defending himself against 91 charges in four separate criminal cases, including two indictments filed by the Justice Department under Biden.

Biden supporters mocked Trump for asking for donations to pay his lawyers. Just last month, Sam Cornall, executive director of the Democratic National Party, warned that the Republican National Committee (RNC) may begin covering Trump's legal fees after new leadership is inaugurated. “Pledging to spend the Republican National Committee’s non-existent war funds on Trump’s legal bills is not a good pitch for donors, who are already refusing to donate.” Cornell said.

Last weekend, Rufus Gifford, Biden's campaign finance chief, said He told MSNBC Which “Every single cent” Donations made by donors were used to get the president's message to voters. “We don't spend money on legal bills.” He said. “We don't sell gold sneakers or any of that stuff.”

Confronting Axios about the use of donations to pay Biden's lawyers, Alex Floyd, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said: “There is no comparison. The Democratic National Committee does not spend a dime of grassroots donor money on legal bills, unlike Donald Trump, who is actively seeking legal fees from his supporters and withdrawing every bank account he can reach, like a personal piggy bank.

Hoare issued a a report about his investigation in February, saying Biden did “Intentionally kept and disclosed” state secrets after leaving his position as vice president in 2017. However, the special counsel did not recommend indicting Biden. He said it would be difficult to prove Biden's intent to a jury because the 81-year-old president appeared in interviews to be… “A well-meaning old man with a weak memory.”
