For the first time in the world… South Korea plans to produce anti-drone laser weapons

Yonhap News Agency quoted the Defense Acquisition Program Administration as saying that the laser weapon is capable of defending against drones and multi-engine helicopters at short range by firing a laser beam generated by optical fiber at the target.

Last month, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration signed a deal worth about 100 billion won ($72 million) with South Korean defense company Hanwha Aerospace to produce the weapon system, Yonhap News Agency reported.

She explained that the way a laser weapon would shoot down a drone in mid-flight is by burning out the motor or other electrical equipment in the drone with light for 10 to 20 seconds.

South Korea calls its laser program the “Star Wars Program.”

Last December, five North Korean drones intruded into its southern neighbor, prompting Seoul to scramble fighter jets and attack helicopters to try to shoot them down, the first such incident since 2017.

Fighting in the Korean War (1950-1953) ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, and the establishment of a demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.
