The exercises also included training to free a ship “hijacked” by pirates, with helicopters dropping special units on board the ship.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Defense, the People's Liberation Army Navy deployed the guided-missile destroyer Urumqi, the guided-missile frigate Linyi, and the supply ship Dongpinghu to participate in the exercises.

The Iranian Navy contributed several helicopters and dozens of ships of different sizes.

The participating naval forces are now gathering in the Iranian port city of Chabahar, where they are reviewing the maneuvers before the exercises officially conclude.

For the first time in the six-year history of the Maritime Security Belt exercise, observers from several other countries attended the event, including Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Oman, India and the United Arab Emirates.

The exercises were originally an Iranian initiative, and have always been a trilateral event, except in 2021, when China was absent.

This year, the maneuvers took place near the entrance to the Persian Gulf – a bottleneck through which a large portion of the world's oil passes.

Off the opposite coast of the Arabian Peninsula, the United States and its allies are conducting their own naval operation aimed at protecting civilian ships from attacks by Houthi militants in Yemen.

The group, which controls large swathes of the war-torn country, has for months been targeting ships it believes are linked to Israel. The militants see this as their contribution to the Palestinian cause amid the Israeli military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

Shortly after Washington, London, and several other countries deployed their naval forces to the region, the Houthis began attacking US and UK ships.
