Women’s volleyball is down to ninth in Oregon

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii’s women’s volleyball team pushed ninth-ranked Oregon State early in the final game of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wine Classic before its bid to claim the championship title fell flat with the Ducks completing a sweep Sunday at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Shreve Center.

The first two sets remained close in the 20 before Oregon (3-0) held off Rainbow Weahen (2-1). The Ducks then ran away with the third set to finish with a 25-21 25-21 25-15 victory in front of a crowd of 5,824.

UH sophomore outside hitter Cailyn Alexander Rainbow Wahine led with 10 kills, eight tackles and an average blocker Amber Eggidi He finished with seven kills and three blocks, including two solo hits. Alexander and Egede were voted to the Team of the Tournament by the coaches and media in attendance.

Igiede finished the weekend with 39 kills for a . 337 hit percentage and was in 16 blocks, including six singles. Alexander recorded 37 kills, 22 holes and nine blocks in the tournament.

Oregon State outside hitter Mimi Collier, the tournament MVP, scored a game-high 17 kills. Outside hitter Gabe Gonzalez added eight kills and two aces, and blocker Kara McGhee was in seven of 10 blocks for the Ducks.



The two teams were tied four times with four changes in the first set, but UH’s 5-1 lead gave Bows an 11-8 lead. Oregon erased a 7-2 deficit giving the Ducks a 19-18 lead. Hawaii tied two more times, the last time at 20-20, before Oregon pulled away to win the series 25-21. Alexander led UH with five kills on five holes.



Early in the second set, Oregon took a 5-0 lead to take a 7-4 lead and never trailed the rest of the way, thanks in part to five aces. Hawaii closed out by a point three times, the last coming at 18-17. But UO edged past Hawaii to take a 2-0 second set lead at 25-21.

setter student Jackie Mathias and a junior outside hitter Paula Gerching They debuted at UH late in the second set. Matias’ first assist went to Ejidi, who went 4-for-5 in the set, cutting Oregon’s lead to 22-20. But Oregon State regained control with kills by Morgan Lewis and Daley McClellan.



The Ducks never fell behind in Group 3 as Hawaii worked various combinations. Oregon hit .312 in the set against UH (-.037) and closed out the weekend without dropping a set in the tournament.

Next, Hawaii will face 22nd-ranked Southern California in a two-game series this week. The Bows will play the Trojans on Thursday, August 31 and Saturday, September 2, with both games starting at 7:00 PM EST.
