A Brief History of a Long Collaborative Relationship (Video/Audio)

The summer of 1999 was a big moment for Derek Trucks. Besides sitting in with Phish and touring with his solo group of the same name, Trucks became a full-time member of the band co-founded by his drummer uncle. Butch Trucks: the Allman Brothers Band. During his tenure with the iconic southern rock band, Trucks and the Other Brothers welcomed the members of Phish into the fold on various occasions.

The Phish/Trucks connection remained strong even after the Allman Brothers Band retired in 2014. Loken Festival. 2016Paige McConnell and John Fishman co-produced A Phil Leech and Friends The performance featured Derek’s sit-down Suzanne Tedeschi On “Mr. Charlie” and “Scary”.
The collaborative relationship between Derek Trucks and Trey Anastasio in particular has blossomed in recent years. On October 14, 2017, Trey interfered with Beacon’s Tedeschi Trucks Band to add guitar and vocals for a show. Leon Russell“Delta Lady” and a sprawling 33-minute rendition of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam”.
The reaction to the Trey/TTB combo has been so overwhelming that LOCKN Festival has dedicated its 2019 main slots to calling: one night Trey Anastasio Band with Derek Trucks, one night Tedeschi Trucks Band with Trey Anastasio.
Anastasio and Trix have been vocal about their mutual respect and admiration as musicians in the run-up to LOCKN’ 2019. When asked about his favorite live guitarist during the interview SiriusXM Radio Phishing‘s Ari FinkAnastasio did not hesitate. Derek is, without a doubt, my favorite guitarist – and, I “I think he’s the best guitar player on earth right now,” Tree said. “When Derek came over, I first saw him when he was little. I loved playing him so much I almost wanted to write him a thank you note. He made me believe in the guitar as a serious instrument again, and influenced the way I play. I play better thanks to Derek Tracks.”
Derek, in an interview with Quincy, MA Patriot LedgerHe added, “It’s fun for me, having to work on someone else’s music and see where it might fit me. You really have to think about what material would fit together, and Trey is a very unique player, with a whole style that he started himself. It’s just fun looking.” And try to find that common ground.”
On the festival’s second night, TAB closed out the LOCKN Main Stage with two sets, the second of which featured Derek Trucks on guitar throughout.
Wasting no time, the augmented Trucks dived into the Phish/TAB crossover titled “Set Your Soul Free”. On this first tune and the rest of Phish’s heavy set that followed, Derek Trucks proved to energize the band and its leader with his incendiary guitar work. From “It’s All Right” to “Camel Walk” to “Ghost”, “Blaze On” and “Dark and Down”, Trucks’ outstanding contributions make each song – and the jam that follows – stronger than the last.
At the end of the group, Derek’s wife and Tedeschi truck squad leader Suzanne Tedeschi She appeared on stage for a duet with Trey on a rendition of the Ghosts of the Forest elegy “Life Beyond a Dream”. While this song has been making its way onto the Phish and TAB charts since its debut during the opening ceremony forest ghosts Played earlier that year, this version featured Suzanne’s soulful vocals and Derek’s elegant accompaniment making it easily their most memorable release to date. Susan stuck on another Trey song, “Rise/Come Together,” before ceding the stage to Trey, Derek, and company for a closer set of “Push On ‘Til The Day.”
With time for a few more, Trey and Derek are back on stage with acoustic guitars in hand to kick off their encore with another Ghosts of the Forest tune, “Brief Time”, and Phish’s latest staple, “More”. Finally, the two guitarists traded their acoustics for their favorite tracks and welcomed the rest of the band back to their respective spots for a rousing duet of “46 Days” and “First Tube” to cap off the phenomenal performance.
The next night, it was the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s turn to host the LOCKN’ Cross celebrations. After a first set full of fan-favorites, TTB set the stage for a set break before they teamed up with Trey. When the band returned to the stage, they were flanked by Tree and another guest guitarist, Doyle Bramhall IIa frequent collaborator with Eric Clapton‘s. The band opened the set with their first-ever performance of Clapton’s old favourite, Derek and the Dominoes“You looked away.” Another Derek and the Dominos debut, “Bell Bottom Blues”, was next. The next single, “Keep On Growing”, was less surprising, since TTB frequently fits this Derek and the Dominos cover on their live sets, but while the song choice may not have been particularly exciting in the void, its appearance after ” Me “Looked Away” and “Bell Bottom Blues” were saying right away: Those are the first three songs that play Derek and the Dominoesclassic album 1970, Layla and Other Miscellaneous Love Songs. The superimposed image of the album cover on the stage screens confirmed the suspicion: this group will be all Layla.
Trey and Doyle’s backing Tedeschi Trucks Band did more than justify this acclaimed album, showering them with shimmering guitar lines to reflect the acclaimed work of both Eric Clapton and Duane Allman on the original album. From “Key To The Highway” to “Little Wing,” and from Suzanne’s powerful vocals on “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” to Trey and Derek’s dueling guitars on the closing track “Layla,” this album made for an amazing night out in Virginia.
Trucks said Guitar World affiliate Layla We got one call early on, and I had the idea of going with a bunch of dominoes. We were at Red Rocks and I was about to call Trey back to discuss it. I mentioned some tunes we were thinking about to my friend Julie, and she said, ‘You should. You just have to sign up (expletive) the whole thing.” … That was instantly the most obvious thing in the world. (He laughs) Once I mentioned it, Trey talked about how important this record was to him and that he never learned all those tunes and would love to learn them.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band went on to release a recording of Layla Set with Trey and Doyle in 2021 as the official live album, Lily’s review. At the time, the Trucks seemed to view the live album with a sense of finality as the culmination of his long and varied history with Trey – though he did leave the door open for future collaborations.
When asked who Guitar World If he thought he’d team up with Trey again in the future, Trax replied, “I’d fancy it because it was so much fun, but when things go well for once like this, there’s a part of me that just wants to let live in that space. … There is something beautiful and powerful about something that was once really there…but I’m sure we’ll end up playing together again one way or another.
