Ex-Pakistani PM Imran Khan sentenced to new jail term — RT World News

The politician and his wife were accused of selling gifts in state possession during his term as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

A Pakistani court sentenced former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife to 14 years in prison in a corruption case. This comes after another court ruling in which Khan was sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of leaking state secrets.

A Pakistani accountability court sentenced the politician and his wife, Bushra Bibi, on Wednesday, in the city of Rawalpindi, not far from the capital, Islamabad. Both were accused of illegally selling state gifts when Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

In addition to the sentence, they were banned from running for public office for ten years and fined $2.7 million.

This comes after Khan was sentenced on Tuesday to ten years in prison on charges of leaking state secrets. The charges relate to a secret cable sent by the Pakistani ambassador in Washington to Islamabad in 2022, which allegedly indicated that the United States wanted to oust Khan because of his neutrality in the Ukraine conflict.

Commenting on the ruling, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party condemned what it described as the ruling. “Totally destroy all existing laws in Pakistan within two days.”

“Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have faced yet another kangaroo trial in which no right of defense was afforded to both of them. Like encryption, this case has no basis to be brought up in any higher court.
