Fire at Bernie Sanders’ office investigated as arson — RT World News
Police are investigating the fire inside US Senator Bernie Sanders' office as arson. The incident occurred in Vermont, the veteran politician's home state.
The Burlington Fire Department said firefighters were called on Friday and discovered that the sprinkler system had been activated due to a fire in the hallway between the elevator and the entrance door. There were no injuries.
“The senator’s office door sustained moderate fire damage, and the third floor and lower floors also sustained significant water damage.” The fire department said.
Police issued a statement on Saturday saying that an unknown suspect sprayed a flammable substance, set it on fire, and left the building.
“A major fire broke out in the door and part of the vestibule, hindering the exit of employees who were working in the office and endangering their lives.” The police said. A motive has not been determined and no arrests have been made so far. The Burlington Fire Marshal's Office added that the fire has been ruled out “Incendiary by nature.”
The senator's team told the press that none of the employees were injured. “We are relieved that none of our employees were injured, and to our knowledge, no one in the building was harmed.” Katherine Van Haast, Sanders' state director, told the press
Sanders, a left-wing independent, was mayor of Burlington in the 1980s and was elected to Congress in 1987. He has been a senator since 2007.
Sanders competed for the Democratic nomination during the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, losing to Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, respectively.
