Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are back on the field tonight and their opponents are looking for some revenge.
Inter Miami hosts Nashville tonight at DRV PNK Stadium at 7:30pm, in a rematch of the League Cup Final from 11 days ago.
Inter Miami won the League Cup after a thrilling 10-9 victory on penalties to settle a 1-1 tie at Nashville Stadium on August 19.
Now, Nashville is looking to avenge its loss while upsetting Inter Miami’s return to the MLS playoff race.

After coming off the bench in Saturday night’s win over the New York Red Bulls, former Barcelona team mates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets are back in the starting lineup tonight against Nashville. Jordi Alba, another former Barcelona player who is currently in Miami, continues to be the mainstay for coach Tata Martino.
Nashville SC, which is in the middle of a series of three games in eight days, is sitting out some key players tonight.
Two of the designated Nashville players — forward Sam Surridge and defenseman Walker Zimmerman — will not be available. The third player designated to the team, 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mokhtar, will start the game off the bench.
And after coming off the bench in his last match against the New York Red Bulls last Saturday, Messi is expected to start In tonight’s game against Nashville.
Messi didn’t start until he could rest after a grueling start to his Inter Miami career.
Since making his debut for the club on 21 July, Messi has played in nine matches, scoring 11 goals and six assists.
He could be on loan to the Argentina national team next month.
Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said after the 2-0 win over the Red Bulls last Saturday that Messi could miss up to three games with Inter Miami due to his duties with the national team.
“The importance is that we value winning and winning in this way because it is something we have to get used to. Leo will miss at least three games,” Martino said. “He will be called up by his national team and others as well. We know a team has to keep winning without them sometimes.
Martino did not specify which matches Messi would miss, or whether he would miss the matches due to rest.

Inter Miami carved a huge hole for themselves in the pre-Messi era, putting themselves last in the Eastern Conference before defeating the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. Inter Miami now has 21 points through 23 games played. However, most of the teams ahead of Miami in the standings have played at least two more games, so having games in hand helps make that case.
The top nine finishers in each conference make the playoffs. During the 2022 season, the ninth-ranked finisher in the Eastern Conference earned 42 points; And in 2021, the ninth-placed team had 47 points.
Just to be safe, let’s say Inter Miami needs to reach the 47-point benchmark to have any chance of making it to the postseason. That means averaging 2.4 points per game, and winning at least seven of their last 11 games. Any loss would be devastating.
