Peaceful times are over – EU state’s PM — RT World News

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said peaceful times in Europe are long over, painting a bleak picture for the continent's future amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

“The times of peace are over. The post-war era is over.” This came during a meeting of the European People's Party in Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday. “We live in a new time – the pre-war era.”

The battle against totalitarian tendencies, corruption and lies is taking place on many fronts. The most dramatic example of this is of course what is happening in the war in Ukraine. The Prime Minister continued.

“We face a simple choice: either we fight to protect our borders, our lands and our values, and defend our citizens and future generations, or [accept] The alternative is defeat.”

Tusk made his comments as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict entered its third year last month, with several European Union heads of state renewing their pledges to continue military and financial aid to Kiev.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said last February that the US-led alliance must prepare for this. “A confrontation that could last for decades.” During his State of the Union address on Thursday, US President Joe Biden pledged to continue supporting Ukraine and accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of doing so. “Sowing chaos throughout Europe and beyond.”

Moscow has blamed the West for provoking the current tensions, arguing that NATO's eastward expansion is one of the main reasons for Russia's ongoing military operation in the neighboring country. Putin stated last year that the West's real goal is “Hour farewell” from Russia.

However, the Russian leader stressed that Moscow has no intention of attacking NATO member states unless they are attacked first.
