Players competing for European Ryder Cup qualifying spots

The battle for last place on both the European and World Points List will come to a head in Switzerland this week, in the final event in Team Europe’s Ryder Cup qualification process.

The race to secure an automatic place in Captain Luke Donald’s squad will be limited to seven players on the field at the event in Crans-sur-Sierre, which will be followed by Donald’s selections for captaincy on Monday 4 September.

Two-time Ryder Cup player Matt Fitzpatrick is the only player who can finish last in the World Points List this week, while six players are still mathematically able to finish last in the European Points List.

They will all start Thursday knowing the fate of their Ryder Cup place is in their hands: whether it’s by doing what they have to do to qualify, or by impressing Captain Donald in the final event of the qualifying period.

Who is already confirmed for Team Europe?

Rory McIlroy, John Rahm, Victor Hovland and Tyrell Hatton have already secured automatic qualification for Team Europe. McIlroy and Ram both made their way into the team with two top spots in the European points list, while Hovland and Hatton recently confirmed their places with two top spots in the world points list.

Currently, Tommy Fleetwood, who will not be in the field this week, is last in the world points list, while Robert McIntyre is third and last in the European points list.

After Tyrell Hutton confirmed himself as the second player to qualify for the world points list behind Victor Hovland, one place remains – currently occupied by England’s Tommy Fleetwood.

However, Matt Fitzpatrick, who became the first person since Seve Ballesteros to defend his title at Crans-sur-Sier Golf Club when he won in 2017 and 2018, tees off in Switzerland this week and has the chance to dethrone Fleetwood to take the title. place qualifies for itself

For now, the pair are separated by just 3.82 points after last week’s PGA Tour Championship, with Fleetwood finishing tied for sixth and Fitzpatrick tied for ninth.

European points list: who is running?

Finishing in a six-way tie for fourth at the D+D REAL Czech Masters, Robert McIntyre retains his lead in the European points table heading into the final week of Ryder Cup qualifying after narrowly increasing his lead over nearest rival Yannick Poll.

The Scotsman made his last hole to end the week 17 points under par, and took 85.42 in the Czech Republic to take his total on the European points list to 1,828.99.

His top five at Albatross Golf Resort also helped extend his lead over Paul, who started the week just 90.67 points behind McIntyre and finished one point behind in 10th place with 16 points under par. Paul earned 50 points to take his tally to 1702.9, leaving him 126.09 points clear of the man who unseated him in the automatic spot after finishing second at the Genesis Scottish Open.

McIntyre and Paul are two of six players on the field this week who can finish the week on Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team. There are different scenarios for this to happen, but Adrian Mironc, Victor Perez, Adrian Otaigwe, W Rasmus Hoggard (Who won this tournament in 2021) all have a mathematical chance of getting the third and final place.

Tommy Fleetwood, who is currently third in the world points list, could also have qualified for the European points list but will not be competing in Switzerland this week.
