Moscow has announced new gains in Donbass as it continues its campaign against vital Ukrainian facilities
The past week of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen active fighting continue in multiple locations along the front line, with hostilities intensifying in Donbas, where Moscow continues its efforts to advance west.
Russia also launched large-scale, long-range strikes on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, including several thermal power plants, completely destroying the largest facility in the Kyiv region.
New gains in Donbass
On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the liberation of the village of Pervomaiskoye, located about 20 kilometers west of the Russian city of Donetsk. The village was an important foothold for Ukrainian forces, because it extends along a sophisticated system of canals, ponds and dams.
Pervomayskoye provided cover for the southern flank of Ukrainian forces trying to entrench themselves at the Orlovka-Tunenko-Berdychy line after the liberation of the strategic city of Avdiivka in mid-February.
While the Russian advance westward in the area appears to have slowed, the army has reported slight gains west of the now breached defensive line.
Of the three settlements along the canal system, only the village of Berdychy remains under partial Ukrainian control, with the situation expected to worsen for Kiev following the successful advance of Russian forces to the north of the village, it was reported on Wednesday.
Critical infrastructure strikes
Russia has continued its renewed campaign against critical facilities in Ukraine, driven by Kiev's increasing efforts to attack the country's oil refineries and other energy facilities. Last Thursday, the Russian military struck several power plants across Ukraine, including the Trybolskaya thermal power plant, the largest in the Kiev region. This is the first time the facility has been targeted.
The station was hit by several projectiles, including new, lighter Russian Kh-69 cruise missiles, which led to a major fire that completely destroyed the generator hall. The Kh-69 missiles are much smaller than other cruise missiles in Moscow's inventory, and can therefore be launched by front-line fighter aircraft and bombers, rather than strategic aircraft, allowing for more flexible use.
The Dobrotvorskaya thermal power plant in western Ukraine was also targeted for the first time since the start of hostilities. Footage circulating on the Internet indicates that the factory was hit simultaneously by two missiles.
Anti-drone tactics
Kamikaze FPV drones became a growing problem for both sides over the course of the conflict, prompting soldiers to come up with additional means of protecting their soft-armored vehicles, especially from strikes from above and from behind.
