Trader Joe’s recalls tamales, its sixth product in 5 weeks

Trader Joe’s is pulling another product from store shelves, marking its sixth recall in five weeks.

Certain packages of Texas Tamale Company Gourmet Black Bean Tamales sold in stores in nine states have been recalled due to an undeclared allergen.

According to their website, a Trader Joe’s supplier warns that one serving of the product may contain undeclared milk. The product batch code is 17023 and the best buy date is June 19, 2025, according to the notice.

Milk is one of the eight foods or food groups that cause the most serious allergic reactions in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The notice continued that there were no illnesses associated with this recall and “all potentially affected products have been removed from sale.”

However, the company urges its customers not to ingest it, and to dispose of the product or return it for a refund.

The company has issued a series of recalls recently. The majority of the recalls have been related to contamination from a foreign object ranging from rocks to insects.

Earlier this month, the company issued a recall of certain boxes of Trader Joe’s multigrain crackers with sunflower seeds and flaxseeds because they may contain a metal.

Trader Joe’s told FOX Business that the timing of the back-to-back recalls is coincidental.

Last month, the company issued a recall of certain boxes of fully cooked falafel from Trader Joe’s after a supplier warned the company that they might contain rocks.

Just before that, another supplier had warned the grocer that certain packages of Trader Joe’s unexpected broccoli cheddar soup might contain bugs.

Two days before the company issued an alert about the soup, it warned customers that certain packages of Trader Joe’s Almond Windmill Cookies, Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Chunk and Almond Cookies were being recalled due to possible rock contamination.

None of the notices mentioned any illnesses or injuries related to the recalled products. The company also did not disclose details of what triggered the supplier’s warnings.

A Trader Joe’s spokesperson said the company is recalling the product as soon as it becomes aware of a problem without waiting for regulatory agencies.

“We care very much about the safety of the products we sell. We err on the side of caution and proactively address issues,” the spokesperson said. “We take voluntary action quickly and aggressively – to investigate potential problems and remove a product from sale if there is any doubt about its safety or quality.”
