There are many unresolved issues in the classified documents case, District Judge Eileen Cannon ruled

A US federal judge has indefinitely postponed the trial of former US President and front-runner Republican candidate Donald Trump over allegations of mishandling of classified documents.

In the summer of 2022, FBI agents raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence and recovered hundreds of secret documents. The Washington Post reported in September of the same year that some of the materials related to American nuclear secrets, the Iranian missile program, and Washington’s intelligence activities in China.

A year later, Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami, Florida. The former president has pleaded not guilty.

The trial was initially scheduled to begin May 20, 2024. However, in a ruling Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon rescheduled the date, arguing that there were eight outstanding substantive motions on which she had not yet decided. The judge also said she believed the allegations of mishandling of national security “Provide new and challenging questions.”

A trial date has been set at this point, Cannon said “This would be unwise and contrary to the court’s duty to give full and fair consideration.” Several issues in this case, pointing out that “Additional pre-trial and trial preparations [are] “It is imperative that this case be presented to a jury.”

Trump's legal team has previously argued that holding the trial so close to the election scheduled for November could amount to interference.

Given the new to ruleIt is unclear whether the trial will begin before the elections, in which Trump will almost certainly face a rematch with US President Joe Biden. The Washington Post indicated that if the Republican Party's front-runner wins, he could appoint a prosecutor who will drop the federal charges against him. The Justice Department has a long-standing policy that a sitting president cannot be indicted.

Trump, the first former president in US history to face criminal charges, is fighting several other legal battles. These include a case involving alleged payments to an adult film actress, and alleged efforts to illegally overturn the 2020 election result. He has denied all charges.
