Reconciliation between US men’s national team manager Greg Berhalter and Gio Reina will have to wait, as the Borussia Dortmund striker has been left out of the 24-man squad selected for the upcoming friendlies against Uzbekistan on September 9 in St Louis, and Oman in St Louis. Paul, Minnesota three days later.

Reyna, one of eight players to miss upcoming matches due to illness or injury, is still in the process of returning to full fitness after sustaining a calf injury in the CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada last June. He just returned to training with Dortmund last week.

The player and manager have not communicated since a dispute between Berhalter on the one hand, and Reina and his parents, Claudio and Daniel on the other, came to light eight months ago. It included Berhalter’s revelation that he had nearly sent an unnamed player – later identified as Reina – home from the World Cup.

In response, Daniel Rina of NFL football exposed a 1992 domestic violence incident involving Berhalter and his wife, Rosalind. US Soccer allowed Gregg Berhalter’s contract to expire during the investigation. The USSF was eventually satisfied with the Berhalters’ explanation for the incident and re-appointed Gregg Berhalter as director the previous June. Anthony Hudson and later PJ Callahan managed the team on an interim basis before Berhalter was re-appointed.

The list still includes many familiar names, including Milan duo Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musa, Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, as well as Juventus midfielder Weston McKinney. Overall, the list includes 12 players who helped the USA reach the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup and 16 players who were part of the CONCACAF Nations League-winning US team this summer.

“We have a long-term strategic approach, with two principles being strong rosters and maintaining continuity,” Berhalter said. “We’re delighted to have a number of key players in this group while also being able to introduce some fresh faces to the first team. Uzbekistan and Oman are two teams we can play in the World Cup, so it’s an important opportunity to gain that experience.”

Other injured players include Bournemouth captain Tyler Adams, Utrecht striker Taylor Booth, Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson, Norwich City striker Josh Sargent, Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Stephen and Nashville defender Walker Zimmerman.

One of the new faces is Palermo defender Christopher Lund. Lund, a 21-year-old left-back, who played internationally for Denmark at youth level, applied for a one-time change of association with FIFA. He is eligible to represent the United States through his mother.

Other players who have not previously played for Inter Miami include goalkeeper Drake Callender, Wolfsburg defender Kevin Paredes and Inter Miami midfielder Ben Cremachi.

Fulham defender Tim Ream returns to the United States after missing the European Nations League due to a broken arm.

International teams from Europe, Africa and South America participate in qualifying for various competitions, which makes them unavailable. This left American football to the schedule
