French mayor had 70kg of cannabis at home – media — RT World News

On Sunday, French police arrested the mayor of the city of Avalon, Jamila Al-Habsawi, as part of a large-scale drug raid. Agence France-Presse and BFM TV reported, citing police sources, that she was arrested after 70 kilograms of hashish were found in her home.

Avalon is a city in the Burgundy Franche-Comte region. Al Habsawi has been mayor since 2021 and is also a regional advisor.

The politician's home was raided as part of a preliminary investigation into drug trafficking.

The Lyon Republic newspaper reported that the house was acquired by the mayor three years ago and that she does not live there. The newspaper added that Avalon City Hall was also searched.

Hugues de Ville, the public prosecutor in Auxerre, told AFP that seven people were arrested, including Al-Habsawi’s two brothers. He said that 983 grams of cocaine, 7,000 euros ($7,600) in cash, and about 20 gold bars were seized in several locations.

The raid was part of a wider anti-drug campaign dubbed “Place nette XXL” which was launched earlier this year. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday that some 473 raids had been carried out, resulting in the arrest of more than 7,000 suspects and the confiscation of 3.6 tons of drugs.
