Israel kills dozens in Syria strikes – reports — RT World News

West Jerusalem adhered to the usual policy of silence after the killing of 40 Syrian soldiers and Iranian-backed fighters

The Syrian Ministry of Defense accused Israel of launching a series of air strikes near Aleppo on Friday morning. The raids, which were not acknowledged by West Jerusalem, resulted in the deaths of about 40 people, according to media reports.

“At approximately 1:45 am, the Israeli enemy launched an air strike from the direction of Athriya, southeast of Aleppo, targeting a number of points in the Aleppo countryside.” The ministry said in a statement. The Ministry did not provide accurate information about the victims or damage, but it said so “Number of” Dead and wounded civilians and soldiers.

Reuters put the death toll at 38, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – a UK-based organization affiliated with anti-government militants in Syria – reported 43 people killed.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the strikes targeted gatherings of Syrian soldiers and Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters, in addition to a weapons depot located near Aleppo International Airport.

Israel did not comment on the attack, and usually remains quiet about its operations in Syrian airspace. Elsewhere, the Jewish state usually takes credit for extraterritorial killings, as was the case later on Friday when an Israeli drone killed Hezbollah's deputy missile commander, Ali Abd Ikhsan Naim, in the Bazouriyeh district of southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah fighters and Israeli soldiers have repeatedly exchanged missile and rocket attacks since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah stated in November that these attacks aimed to restrict Israeli forces near the Lebanese border and establish forces “A state of anxiety, anticipation, panic, and fear among the enemy’s political and military leadership.” It has been adopted by Shiite militias in Syria Similar tacticsalbeit on a smaller scale.

However, the frequency and intensity of these cross-border attacks has increased in recent days, with Israeli airstrikes killing 16 people – including seven medics – in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. The raids came after Hezbollah fired a barrage of rockets at Israel, killing one person.
