Israel will invade Rafah with or without hostage deal – Netanyahu — RT World News

The Prime Minister directly contradicted his Foreign Minister, who promised to suspend the operation if Hamas released its prisoners

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israel will send troops to the city of Rafah regardless of whether it reaches a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement with Hamas. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz had previously promised to cancel the controversial operation in exchange for the release of the prisoners.

“The idea that we will stop the war before achieving all its goals is unthinkable.” Netanyahu said in a statement from his office. He added: “We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas brigades there, with or without an agreement, to achieve complete victory.”

Rafah is located on the southern border of the Gaza Strip with Egypt, and is home to approximately 1.4 million Palestinians who fled the northern areas of the Strip. Since October, Israel has carried out regular air strikes in Rafah against what it claims are Hamas targets, and Netanyahu has for months threatened to launch a ground invasion of the city, despite US and UN objections.
