Cathy Hochul said she “missed the mark” when she claimed black kids in the Bronx had never heard of computers
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed remorse over the allegation of black children in the inner city “I don't even know what the word computer is.” Hochul was singled out for her comment and accused of bigotry.
She made the statement at a conference in California on Monday, when she was discussing how politicians can expand access to tech jobs for underserved communities.
“Right now, we have young black kids growing up in the Bronx who don't even know what the word computer is. They don't know, they don't know this stuff.” She said.
Her remark was not questioned by her interviewer, but was quickly mocked online. Many prominent conservatives accused her of showboating “The soft intolerance of low expectations” While State Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo, a fellow Democrat who represents the Bronx, called for comment “Harmful, deeply misleading and truly appalling.”
“Oh my God, not only do we know what a computer is, we all have one in our pockets!” Florida congressional candidate Laverne Spicer wrote in X. “You sound just as racist as silly Joe Biden did when he said poor kids are just as smart and talented as white kids.”
“I made a mistake and I regret it.” Hochul said in a statement later Monday. “Of course black kids in the Bronx know what computers are — the problem is that they often lack access to the technology needed to land high-paying jobs in emerging industries like artificial intelligence.”
Republicans often denounce Democratic Party efforts to attract black votes as racist. Most notably, President Joe Biden's criticism of Voter ID Laws as “Jim Crow 2.0” It was singled out by conservative politicians and pundits, who argued that it implied that black people and other minorities were somehow unable to obtain photo ID.
