The deadline to file a claim in Facebook’s $725 million collective privacy settlement is Friday, and only eligible users who file a claim will be among those who will receive a portion of the multimillion-dollar payment.
A $725 million class-action settlement has been reached with Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc. late last year, and it could mean money for some users.
Anyone who was a Facebook user in the United States at any time between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022 is eligible for file a claim.
Settlement guidelines have been expanded to include more users. But how much you can get, and what you’ll need to file a claim, depends on several factors.
Eligible users have until August 25, 2023 to apply.
Meta is paying to settle a lawsuit that alleged that the world’s largest social media platform allowed millions of its users’ personal information to become available to third parties without their permission, and claimed that the platform did not monitor or enforce third party access to the data they received. This includes Cambridge Analytica, the company that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and continued to use it for political advertising on the platform.
The latest lawsuit and settlement differs from the $650 million class action settlement it reached with Facebook in Illinois last year, which resulted in hundreds of dollars in payments to more than a million residents. However, it is one of the many social media settlements in Illinois. Another settlement that currently accepts claims is that of Instagram.

Who is eligible to file a claim?
Anyone who was a Facebook user in the United States at any time between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022 is eligible for file a claim.
Settlement eligibility guidelines were expanded this summer to more users. But how much you can get, and what you’ll need to file a claim, depends on several factors.
Under the latest update, individuals who had Facebook accounts during the period of the deleted lawsuit are now also eligible to file a claim.
An email sent to Facebook account holders said the change affects individuals who deleted one or more Facebook accounts in the study period May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 before creating a new Facebook account in the same period.
How do I fill in the claim form?
Individuals hoping to receive payment as part of a class action settlement can file a claim here Any time until August 25, 2023.
Those who file a deleted account claim are required to do the following:
- Go to settlement website
- Click Submit Claim.
- Click the link at the top of the page to amend your claim (“Submitted a claim? Click here to amend your claim”).
- Provide the Notice ID and Confirmation Code provided at the top of this Notice in order to access and amend your claim.
- In the “Details” section of the form, go to the third question (“Are you filing a claim for a checking account, a deleted account, or a combination of the two?”)
- Choose from the options: “Checking Account(s),” Deleted Account(s), or “Current & Deleted Accounts”.
- Complete the required information in relation to your account(s), as applicable.
What do I need to submit a claim?

Each eligible claimant will be allocated “1 point per month” if they have an active Facebook account during that period. Once you determine the total number of Claimants and their points, along with the total amount of the Settlement Fund, each person will then receive a specified amount, multiplied by the total number of points.
Deadlines to find out
Those who do not file a claim, choose not to participate, or object to the Settlement are automatically part of the Settlement, but are not eligible to receive payment unless a claim is made.
The deadline for submitting a claim is August 25, 2023.
The final settlement approval hearing is scheduled for September 7, 2023 at 11 a.m. CST.
