In December 2019, the Indonesian Football Association announced the appointment of South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong as the national team coach.
Shin succeeds former South Korea national team coach Scott Simon McMenamy and signs a 4-year contract.
General Mohammad Aliwan, chairman of the Indonesian Football Association, confirmed that Shin Tae-yong's experience was the main reason for the decision to hire him to oversee the national team.
“Mr. Shen will have long-term goals because we want him to have a long-term development plan, but his initial goal is to prepare for the national team for the Asian qualifiers,” the general said.
