Trump loses defamation case against E. Jean Carroll — RT World News

The former president was ordered to pay more than $80 million to the woman who accused him of rape

A Manhattan jury has ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million to journalist and writer E. Gene Carroll.

Carroll argued that Trump damaged her reputation in 2019 when he publicly claimed that she lied when she accused him of rape.

Besides Carroll, the jury ruled on Friday that Trump must pay $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. The jury found that the former president's statements caused Carroll emotional and reputational harm.

Trump vowed to appeal the ruling.“Absolutely ridiculous!” He wrote on Social Truth, describing the case against him as a “witch hunting” President Joe Biden used it to undermine his reelection campaign.

“Our legal system is out of control, and is being used as a political weapon. They took away all our First Amendment rights. This is not America! Trump wrote.

Carole accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a luxury department store in New York in the 1990s when she was a columnist for Elle magazine. Trump denied the allegations, testifying in court that he had never met Carroll.

During a similar trial in May 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll $2 million in damages for sexual assault and nearly $3 million for defamation. Trump also appealed that ruling.
