Turkish politician killed while celebrating election win (VIDEO) — RT World News

A prominent member of the Republican People's Party died after a balcony collapsed during a victory celebration

Celebrating the victory in the local elections in the Turkish city of Denizli turned into a fatal accident for the Turkish Republican People's Party, with one person killed and seven others injured.

The incident occurred during the night while party members and supporters were gathering to celebrate Kadir Tatik's victory in his campaign for the office of local mayor, after the preliminary election results were announced.

Footage from the scene shows several party members gathered on the balcony of a building, while a crowd of onlookers cheered them on outside. The balcony was seen suddenly collapsing, clearing away the rest of the structure.

The accident resulted in the injury of eight party members who were standing on the balcony. Three people were seriously injured, and one of them, deputy head of the local branch of the Republican People's Party, Mehmet Balazs, died in hospital shortly afterwards.

The fatal accident represents a convincing victory achieved by the Republican People's Party in the Turkish local elections, which were held across the country on Sunday. The party achieved a significant victory over the ruling Justice and Development Party, attracting nearly 38% of the vote nationally, compared to just over 35% received by its main rival.

The opposition party is now set to control the capitals of at least 35 of Turkey's 81 provinces, including most of the country's major cities. AKP candidates won only 24 regional capitals, losing more than a third of the positions they held before the elections.
