UN peacekeepers claim attack by Israel — RT World News

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon accused the Israeli army of attacking a peacekeeping patrol on Saturday during a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas.

The incident reportedly occurred around midday, near the Lebanese village of Aitaroun, on the border with Israel and 125 kilometers from the Lebanese capital, Beirut. According to UNIFIL, this was the case “During a period of relative calm along the Blue Line.”

“Today at around 12 noon, a UNIFIL patrol came under IDF fire in the vicinity of Aitaroun in southern Lebanon.” The United Nations peacekeeping forces said in a statement on their “X” page (formerly Twitter), adding that no peacekeepers were injured, but the bombing caused damage to their vehicle.

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in October, the Israeli-Lebanese border has witnessed frequent exchanges of fire, especially between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah group. According to Agence France-Presse, cross-border shooting killed 109 people in Lebanon, including 77 Hezbollah fighters and 14 civilians, three of whom were journalists.

Last month, UNIFIL, which was established by the UN Security Council in 1978 to monitor the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, said that one of its members was wounded in an artillery attack on the mission’s base near the village of Houla on the Lebanese-Israeli border.

After announcing a four-day truce in Gaza on Friday, Hezbollah said it would abide by the terms of the ceasefire if Israel did so, according to what Al Jazeera quoted a Hezbollah source as saying.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission strongly condemned Saturday’s attack, describing it as an attack “Very worrying” He urged all parties to the conflict to do so “To protect peacekeepers.” The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) warned on Friday that further escalation in southern Lebanon could lead to… “Serious consequences,” He urged all parties to do so “Stop this cycle of violence.”

Israel has not yet commented on the incident. Earlier, the Israeli army announced that it struck Hezbollah targets in response to the firing of missiles at northern Israel.
