Clashes erupt at UCLA overnight after camp declared 'illegal'

Violent clashes broke out between pro-Palestine demonstrators and anti-Palestine demonstrators at UCLA late Tuesday.

According to several videos posted online and local media reports, a group of pro-Israel activists attempted to dismantle the walls of a pro-Palestinian camp on the ground, where students have been protesting the war in Gaza over the past week. Just hours ago, UCLA announced the camp “illegal” He urged the activists to leave.

The confrontation between those in the camp and their opponents reportedly escalated before 11pm local time, when counter-demonstrators began throwing stones and lighting fireworks inside the camp.

Footage from the scene also shows violent quarrels breaking out between student opposition demonstrators.

People posting on X (formerly Twitter) early Wednesday complained that although the clashes had broken out hours earlier, there was no police presence.

The Los Angeles Police Department later said it was aware of the situation at UCLA and was on its way to the scene at the university's request due to… “Multiple acts of violence.” There have been no reports of injuries or arrests so far.

The situation at the University of California, Los Angeles, is the latest escalation of a protest movement against the Israeli war in Gaza that has spread across American college campuses. Student activists are urging universities and the US government to sever ties with Israel and force an end to hostilities.

The protests were largely peaceful, with students setting up protest camps in more than 40 schools across the country. However, some demonstrations led to confrontations with law enforcement, and many were arrested.

Earlier on Tuesday, a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators took over a building on the campus of Columbia University in Manhattan, New York. It took police several hours to evacuate the passengers, and more than 100 people were arrested.
