Fire breaks out at US ammunition factory — RT World News
A US Army plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania, that specializes in artillery ammunition, caught fire on Monday afternoon, according to local media reports and witnesses.
The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant began emitting black smoke shortly before 3 p.m. local time. Local emergency services were called to deal with what was described as a “Temple fire.”
No additional details were available.
The Joint Munitions Command (JMC) facility is owned by the US Army but operated by General Dynamics-Ordnance and Tactical Systems. It manufactures 155 mm and 105 mm artillery shells, 120 mm mortar shells, and 203 mm naval shells, in addition to a variety of smoke, lighting, and incendiary shells.
The United States is trying to intensify the production of artillery ammunition to supply Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Scranton is a community of about 75,000 residents in northeastern Pennsylvania. It is the birthplace of US President Joe Biden. He is scheduled to visit the city on Tuesday.
