Tehran vows to avenge assassinated generals — RT World News

Iran will take “countermeasures” against the US and Israel over the recent airstrike in Syria

Iran vowed to retaliate against Israel and the United States in response to the air strike in Syria, which killed a group of senior military commanders in Tehran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that seven officers, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, were killed in the airstrike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus on Monday. Zahedi was a senior commander in the Quds Force – the Iranian Revolutionary Guard unit charged with operations abroad – and Rahimi was his deputy.

Officials in Syria and Iran accused Israel of responsibility for the attack. He added, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, while reserving its right to take countermeasures, is the one that decides the type of reaction and punishment for the aggressor.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a statement carried by the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned on X (formerly Twitter) that the United States, a close ally of Israel, “He must be held accountable.”

Israel did not comment on the raid. The Israeli government rarely publicly acknowledges airstrikes in Syria, which Damascus has repeatedly denounced as a violation of its sovereignty.

The Israeli government has accused Iran of orchestrating the deadly October 7 attack on Israeli citizens, which sparked the ongoing war with the Palestinian Hamas movement. Last month, the Israel Defense Forces struck what it said were militants linked to Iran in Lebanon.

Tehran pledged to continue its support for Hamas and other Palestinian groups but insisted that Hamas had decided to invade Israeli territory itself.
