Vast majority in France reject Macron’s Ukraine troop proposal – poll — RT World News

The French President said that he did not rule out deploying NATO forces to assist Ukrainian forces

A new poll shows that more than two-thirds of the French people believe that President Emmanuel Macron was wrong when he suggested that NATO might one day send its forces to support Kiev in the conflict with Moscow.

The results of the poll published by the French newspaper Le Figaro on Thursday showed that 68% of respondents did not agree with Macron’s comments regarding the future deployment of NATO in the war-torn country, while only 31% said they agreed, and the rest had not yet decided.

Other major countries in the US-led military bloc similarly distanced themselves from Macron's comments, which he made on Monday after a meeting of European leaders in Paris. The president said during a press conference while he was there 'There is no consensus' NATO members intend to send troops to Ukraine “In terms of dynamics, we cannot rule anything out. We will do everything necessary to prevent Russia from winning this war.”

In the days that followed, the United States, Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and other key members of the North Atlantic bloc were quick to clarify that there were still no plans to deploy any NATO forces in Ukraine.

However, McCone doubled down on his statement, telling reporters Thursday that he meant what he said, and that his words were true. “It has been weighed, considered and measured.”

However, some smaller members of the NATO bloc – namely the Baltic states Estonia and Lithuania – appear to be backing Macron, with senior officials from both countries suggesting that sending troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out.

Moscow strongly condemned Macron's statements and warned the US-led coalition against taking further hostile moves. If NATO forces are actually deployed in Ukraine, the matter will not be limited to a direct confrontation between the alliance and Russia “maybe,” but “inevitable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned.
