Venezuelan farmer Juan Vicente Pérez Mora died two months before his 115th birthday

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, the world's oldest person, died at the age of 114 on Tuesday in Venezuela, according to local officials.

The retired farmer became the oldest man alive in 2020, and was officially recognized as such by Guinness World Records in 2022, when he was 112 years old.

Perez died just two months before his 115th birthday in the Venezuelan state of Tachira, according to Governor Freddy Bernal.

“Dear Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, today, with deep sadness and pain, we say goodbye to this archetype of a man from Táchira, humble, hardworking, peaceful, passionate about family and tradition.” Bernal wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro commented on his death, saying: “Juan Vicente Pérez Mora has passed away forever at the age of 114.”

Pérez was born in the town of Alcobre, Tachira state in the Andes, on May 27, 1909, the ninth of ten children. The farmer, known as Tio Vicente, began working at the age of five with his father and brothers, helping harvest sugarcane and coffee, according to a 2022 Guinness World Records statement.

While still farming, Pérez became mayor of Cariquina in 1948 and was responsible for resolving land disputes and family disputes for ten years, Guinness said.

A father of 11 children, as of 2022 he has 42 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The secret to his long life, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was… “Work hard, rest on vacation, go to bed early, drink a cup of aguardiente every day, love God, and always carry Him in your heart.”

The oldest person in the world is currently Maria Branyas Moreira, who celebrated her 117th birthday in Catalonia, Spain, last month.

The oldest person ever was Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122 years old and died in 1997, according to Guinness.
