Sanaa University in Yemen announced that its doors are open to those who support Palestine
Sanaa University, said to be run by the Houthi armed group, has offered students suspended from American universities for organizing pro-Palestinian protests the opportunity to study in the Yemeni capital.
More than 2,000 people were arrested during demonstrations that took place at dozens of American universities in recent weeks, leading to the suspension of many of them.
“We are serious about welcoming students who have been suspended from American universities for supporting Palestinians.” An official at the Yemeni University of Sanaa was quoted as saying to Reuters. “We are fighting this battle with Palestine in every possible way.” He reportedly claimed.
Sana'a University issued a statement praising it “Humanity” The position of American students, saying that they can continue their studies in Yemen.
Students have set up protest camps in more than 40 colleges across the United States since mid-April, calling on Washington and its universities to sever ties with Israel and put an end to the violence in Gaza. Several schools, including Columbia University in New York City, called in the police to quell the demonstrations.
“The University Board of Directors condemns the suppression of freedom of expression that academics and students in American and European universities are subjected to,” Sana'a University has stated that an email address will be provided to students looking to have their offer accepted.
The Houthis, who claim to be the Yemeni government, have been attacking ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November in support of Gaza. They began targeting ships linked to Israel in response to the West Jerusalem attack on the Palestinian enclave.
The group also carried out numerous attacks on ships linked to their owners or operators in the United Kingdom or the United States following air strikes launched by those countries on Houthi positions. The activists pledged to continue their campaign until the Jewish state stops its attack on Gaza.
The attacks seriously disrupted global shipping traffic through the Suez Canal, a vital route between Asia and Europe.
